USA (June 14, 2022) – Born in Kenya and being the son of an army officer, John has shared Alexander Heroys’ grandfather’s story in the newly-released book called “To Serve the Russian Empire.” The lieutenant colonel and formerly Grenadier Guards, Heroys mentioned in the foreword of the book that John has depicted the story well. According to John, this book depicts the story of a man named Boris Vladimirovich. The author has struggled hard to find out his family history and then has written this book. There was a piece of memoirs that Boris had written in the 1930s. Heroys’ father Vladimir edited the family content from his military memoir. The full originals are now available at St. Petersburg Library. Later, he printed the content in Paris in 1970. The language was completely Russian. Heroys’ brother Claude also studied the memoirs and the family history and he affirmed, “Boris is my hero; he wrote it all down.” According to Heroys, there is a major lack of information about Boris’ counter-revolutionary activities in Russia and England when he left the battlefield of the First World War in Austria and began his new life in the lands of England. He started his new life as an artist there.
The author John covered the time period in the epilogue of the book. He has written it based on the papers left by Dorothy Barkworth, Boris’ companion of 15 years, the documents of “The Heroys’ Family History” written by Claude, Alexander’s brother, and a book called “The Luck to Survive” by John’s relation Lt. Col. Brian Edwards. Anyways, the military memoirs were in Russian. John took extensive efforts to translate it into English. It was tiresome because according to Alexander, John has no idea about the Russian language beforehand. Still, he went through every word and line of the book and translated it taking help from the computer translators. He has to overcome many challenges like Russian idioms, military terminology, complicated names of the family members, places, etc. As per the details mentioned by Alexander, even after these hardships, the book written by John has a Russian touch which makes the story more humane than ever.
The book started by describing how the man Boris attended two prestigious boarding schools in St. Petersburg. Chamber pages were a vital factor at that time. And Boris got a chance to be one of the chamber pages to Princess Alix at her wedding to the famous Tsar Nicholas II. He was commissioned into the elite Egersky Life Guards regiment. He paints a broad picture of the regimental life which largely includes the officer’s mess on Ruzovskaya Street, the special guard duty at the Winter Palace and Anichkov Palace, the renowned Peter and Paul fortress, and so on.
According to John, “I found his story fascinating, a unique history from the last days of Imperial Russia, leading me on to fill in all the gaps, greatly encouraged by Claude and Alexander, Boris’ grandsons.” Thus, the book becomes a classic piece that describes the diversified life of a man.
