As a performance-oriented smartphone company, OnePlus has disappointed many fans by arbitrarily reducing CPU performance on OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro models without prior notice to users.
The developers of Geekbench, a popular performance evaluation application, expressed their disgust on Twitter that when they learned about OnePlus’ work. “We will consider this a move to manipulate the benchmark and will remove two OnePlus smartphones from our rankings,” they shared their opinion.
According to Anandtech’s test, OnePlus’ two most expensive smartphones both perform worse than rivals like Samsung Galaxy S21 in many applications. The machine only runs at the highest speed when opening the Geekbench application.
OnePlus is not the first company to “squeeze” smartphone performance. Apple did the same to make sure the iPhone didn’t shut down in 2017, leading to a very strong response from consumers and Apple’s 2-year battery replacement discount campaign.
However, according to Android Central, OnePlus’ biggest mistake was underestimating customers. The company believes that users will not notice the difference on the OnePlus 9 phone model and manipulate application performance to their liking.
In fact, performance manipulation through smartphone benchmarks has been around since the early 2010s, so what OnePlus did with device performance isn’t entirely wrong.
However, Android Central claims that OnePlus has not been transparent with customers about how the device works. Maybe OnePlus thinks the user community will ignore this problem easily.
As a result, some software and performance of the OnePlus 9 or 9 Pro will be affected. Of course, users still want their phone to always perform well, not just in the performance measurement application.
