Tips To Get Rid Of Motion Sickness

One of the most irritating things that can happen while traveling is motion sickness. Many people experience this nasty issue when they travel. It can happen while traveling by any modes of travel, including plane, train, bus, or ship. The symptoms of motion sickness are extremely annoying, too, as it can range from nausea to dizziness, sweating, and vomiting. The discomfort caused by the issue is temporary and does not create any long-term problems. However, it can be extremely inconvenient at the time of traveling and can spoil the fun of the journey. In general, children aged between 5-12 years and older adults are more prone to the issue of motion sickness than others. It is also known by the name of airsickness, seasickness, and carsickness.

Motion sickness issue is usually caused when one part of your balancing sense system (the inner ears, eyes, and sensory nerves) senses that your body is moving, but other parts are not. The conflict between these senses is the cause behind the motion sickness problem. Motion sickness can happen when you board anything that is moving, which includes motions of car, amusement park rides, airplanes, boats, and ships. The sickness can also be triggered from video games, flight simulators, and by looking into a microscope. This problem can be prevented by taking few precautionary steps and applying some tips at the time of travel.

Take control

If you are the passenger of the car, then consider taking control of the vehicle. Studies reveal that motion sickness is generally caused when the movement of your eyes differs from the movement of your inner ear senses. Hence, when you drive the car, these senses connect in a better way.

Face the direction you are heading towards

In case you are not driving, then face the direction in which you are going. It shall again help in disconnecting your visual senses and your inner ear senses. When on a ship, try moving from stern to the bow of the boat. In the car, swapping the rear seat with someone in the front shall help in reducing the symptoms.

Keep the eyes on the horizon

Trying to focus on stationary objects at a distance is yet another way that helps in the visual stimuli. For that, again, you need to move positions in the vehicle in which you are traveling.

Drink water or carbonated beverage

When traveling, keep sipping on some cold water or carbonated drink such as ginger ale, and seltzer which can reduce the issue of nausea. Don’t drink caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, and soda that dehydrate you and make nausea symptoms worse.

Distract yourself

Turn on the music and start a conversation to keep your mind distracted from how you are feeling. When you are able to distract yourself, you shall feel better enough. Research reveals that listening to any music may help in alleviating the symptoms of nausea and other psychological issues that are connected with the problem of motion sickness.
