Kratos has many moves, but these are some of his best.
God of War Ragnarok doesn’t change the core gameplay of God of War 2018, which is good because we didn’t want it to. Thankfully, it provides Kratos with a plethora of new resources to make use of as he fights his way through the nine realms in an effort to thwart Odin, teach his son Atreus the right way to live, and overcome the shame of his past.
There are so many to choose from that it can sometimes be too much. If you’re confused by all the skills you can use, just stick to the ones below, and we guarantee you’ll win every fight God of War Ragnarok throws at you.
Freezing Throw
One of the most fun things to do in games is to throw the Leviathan Axe. Of course, it’s even better when it actually hits an enemy. When you throw the axe with R2, you can use Freezing Thow. This stops enemies in their tracks from a distance, giving you plenty of time to run up and start a combo.
The best part is that you can leave the axe in your foe and begin a new combo with a different weapon.
Rushing Chaos
This time, the Blades of Chaos are with Kratos almost from the start. The Leviathan Axe can’t reach as far as these weapons can. This simple move helps their range.
To get close to an enemy, all you have to do is sprint and press R1. In general, the Blades of Chaos are better at fighting groups, and this move will also hurt other nearby enemies. It doesn’t look fancy, but it will do the job.
Returning Storm
This is a good match for Freezing Throw. Use the above move to stab the enemy, run up to them, and then press L1 and R1 at the same time to use this spinning move as part of a powerful combo.
It also helps in a number of other ways. If you’re already fighting other enemies and your axe is somewhere else, you can use this move to attack instead of just calling it back.
Spartan Rage – Fury
In God of War Ragnarok, you can use three different types of Spartan Rage skills, but Fury is still the best in almost every fight. It not only lets you attack different enemies whenever you want, but it also slowly heals your health. Wrath is a single-target attack, while Valor is a small health boost. Wrath is a combination of these two abilities.
We suggest that you wait until you’ve lost some health before using Wrath. This way, you can get some health back while beating someone up.
Spear Drill
The Draupnir Spear gives Kratos a new way to fight from a distance. At first, you can throw an unlimited number of spears.
As soon as you can, get the Spear Drill skill to hold the throw button and add a drill attack to every throw. With this move alone, you can kill some enemies before they even have a chance to get close to you. The Leviathan Axe can be thrown, but the Draupnir Spear can shoot faster.
Njord’s Tempest
Runic attacks give you a cooldown ability, and you can use two of them for each weapon. Njord’s Tempest is one of the first ones you get, and it stays a good friend for the whole journey.
When enemies have you surrounded and you feel like you can’t do anything, just use this move. It will clear out most of the enemies in the area. More rotations are done by Kratos, the more powerful an attack is. It works well even against bosses and other enemies that are hard to knock down.
Chaotic Rampage
Some of the later abilities are real combos that require a certain mix of light and heavy attacks. As good as these are, they are harder to remember and use often in battle.
This is fixed in Chaotic Rampage by making you hold down R1 to start a combo. Each step up the skill tree gives the ability one more hit. By the end, the combo is long and will finish off most weaker enemies quickly.
Vengeful Sickle
With Freezing Throw, you can keep an enemy frozen for a longer time. The Vengeful Sickle makes the Leviathan Axe spin in place, doing a lot of damage to a single enemy.
It is a great way to attack an enemy from afar if you plan to get close to them. More upgrades add more rotations and do more damage to the enemy. It also looks like a lot of fun to use.
Hyperion Grapple
This move uses the Blades of Chaos’ best feature, which is their range. This makes it stand out in God of War Ragnarok and in action/adventure games in general. Daniel Anyanwoke made the word game Foodle, which was based on Wordle.
When you use the blade to pierce an enemy, hold R1 and you can whip toward the enemy and hit them again. When Kratos is running toward the enemy, he is most likely to get hurt, so you should take advantage of anything that brings you closer to your enemies quickly.
Draupnir’s Call
The best thing about the Draupnir Spear is that you can set off the spears you’ve already thrown. It’s a strong move at first, but each upgrade makes it even stronger and more effective.
When you throw these spears in the middle of a battle, they stay stuck in enemies for a while. This makes the explosion a great backup plan to stun enemies as they get close. Also, Draupnir’s Call can be used with many other abilities from the same weapon, since many of them leave spears behind.
