Formed in 2012 by singer/songwriter Cleto Cordero and drummer Jason Albers, Flatland Cavalry has come a long way since the two college roommates performed together at casual events and local concerts. Moving base from Midland to Lubbock, the duo were soon joined by bassist Jonathan Saenz, guitarist Reid Dillon, and Laura Jane on fiddle. Together, they swiftly garnered a respectable following of country music fans with their evocative lyrics, smooth melodies and gritty appeal.
After much success performing at live concerts, the band released its debut EP, Come May, in 2015 backed only by a crowd-funding campaign. This was soon followed by their first full-length album, Humble Folks, in 2017. Praised by country music insiders and often compared to the Turnpike Troubadours, Flatland Cavalry had officially broken into the world of country music with this wholly successful debut and their well-received concerts. What sets them apart is their ability to balance substantial lyrics with pleasing melodies on an album that is a healthy mix of danceable numbers, soulful love songs and classic West Texan twang.
Following the departure of Laura Jane, Flatland Cavalry was joined by violinist Wesley Hall in 2018 and soon released their sophomore album, Homeland Insecurity, the next year. The album explores emotions that define the present moment, dispelling the myth that growth is a singular event. Cordero’s skills as a storyteller shine through, backed by some incredible fiddle work and a distinct sound that defies the band’s youthful face.
Taking the show on the road, Flatland Cavalry has been playing concerts across the United States since the release of their latest album and will continue to do so throughout 2019. The band is at its best when performing live at sold-out concerts where they can feed off the crowd’s energy, bringing the lyrics to life as the crowd dances, sings and sways along to the tune.
