Colors, Laughter and Entertainment at Snowbombing Festival

“The greatest show on snow…,” “a party in an igloo atop a mountain…,” “hands down the best trip to the mountains…,” these are a few terms people have used to describe their experience at one of Europe’s grandest snow and music festivals – Snowbombing.

Today a major music festival in Europe, Snowbombing was started in 2000 as a small club night in the picturesque French commune of Risoul, with the desire to bring a ski-holiday with tasteful music to people.  The showrunners set about asking their club-nights-running friends to join them for what would be an all-expenses-paid holiday in the French Alps. With the DJs on board, promotions began in full-swing and the debut edition witnessed a footfall of roughly 300 people. Snowbombing shifted its venue to Mayrhofen, Austria in 2005 and has since flourished into a week-long event replete with concerts, DJ and street parties, and more.

It initially focused on providing something new for people who wanted to party and dance the night away to electronic music. It was only in 2008 that the organizers decided to push the envelope and added live concerts to the festival program. As the popularity of the music festival grew, more and more activities such as winter sports, ski performances and parties in unusual locations were added to the bill. Other elements like fancy dress events, presence of emcees like Mr. Motivator, and pools and saunas for relaxation helped set Snowbombing apart from its contemporaries. The organizers also devised an ingenious way to get people who didn’t want to or couldn’t fly to attend, thus greatly increasing the number of attendees.

The Snowbombing Road Trip was essentially a drive from the UK to Mayrhofen that included collecting points on the way and an overnight pit stop, and ended with a procession that marked the end of the journey and the beginning of the festival.  Another major factor that helped Snowbombing blossom into the music festival that it is today was the presence of some big names like Fatboy Slim, Tinie Tempah, Mark Ronson and Mylo, among others on its enviable lineup.

The pure, unadulterated fun that one gets to experience here makes Snowbombing a must-attend affair. In a time when new festivals are cropping-up almost every year and many well-established ones are floundering, consistent innovation has helped Snowbombing register constant success and proved that it is here to stay.
