7 Key Differences Between Classic and Modern SharePoint

SharePoint, a Microsoft collaboration platform, is primarily used to store and share documents. There are two frameworks of this platform, namely, classic SharePoint and modern SharePoint.

While classic is the legacy framework that ruled for more than two decades, SharePoint released the modern version with added features and improved usability. Continue reading to know the significant aspects in which these two versions differ.

1. Home Page of SharePoint

Thanks to the sophisticated user interface (UI), SharePoint’s home page has a new look in the modern version.

SharePoint’s classic home page includes sections for announcements, calendars, and links. SharePoint’s latest home page features news, quick links, recent online activity, and a Document Library.

2. Team Sites

SharePoint team sites are ideal for facilitating team collaboration. It has been upgraded with several new features in the modern version.

You can now use the quick launch menu to make announcements, add tasks, add entries to your calendar, etc. In addition, color customization is now faster and easier.

3. Integration With Microsoft 365 Tools

The main difference between the classic and modern team SharePoint is the integration with Microsoft 365 apps. As a result, the latest SharePoint has become a catch-all platform.

The users can create lists for calendars, announcements, tasks, and more, while SharePoint handles the content management. Thanks to the integration service, you can now access the following Microsoft 365 apps within the modern team site:

  • There was no Planner equivalent in the classic version. During projects, teams can align their efforts with this tool that works as a digital kanban board.
  • Your team can share videos with each other using Stream, the video hosting service. With the classic version, you couldn’t share videos easily. Stream’s integration with SharePoint modern makes the process seamless.
  • SharePoint supports the integration of Microsoft Exchange calendars, so each group can use a shared mailbox and calendar.
  • This is an enterprise social network that facilitates quick and easy communication among team members. Although Yammer was available in the classic version, it did not integrate with SharePoint sites. Yammer integration in modern SharePoint allows you to use it with Microsoft Groups.
  • OneNote is a note-taking app that’s ideal for collaborative teamwork. Users of SharePoint can easily use OneNote. To get a clear view of their projects, users of the newest SharePoint can create notes or to-do lists on OneNote.

4. SharePoint Document Library

Lists and libraries are integral parts of SharePoint, and its modern interface offers better usability. SharePoint’s new list and library interface provides a more modern appearance and better performance.

From the SharePoint library, you can now download multiple files as a ZIP file at once. In addition to this, you will also be able to sort and group columns, change file details quickly, pin documents, etc.

5. Power Automate

Power Automate also integrates with SharePoint lists and libraries that you can access from the toolbar. Although Power Automate doesn’t have every SharePoint workflow action, it’s useful for performing the essential tasks.

6. SharePoint News

Using classic SharePoint, creating a newsfeed requires building your own solution. The master pages were added, web parts were added, and CSS was customized. However, the modern version of SharePoint doesn’t have the classic newsfeed, but a revamped new section.

With this tool, you can share any news with your team with less time and effort. You can create and share any type of post, from announcements to status updates. With its intuitive UI and cleaner look, the software offers a more dynamic experience to its users.

You can use Audience Targeting to ensure your news is visible to the right audience in addition to adding compelling graphics.

7. In-Line Editing

You’ll be redirected to another page even if you simply rename an item. With in-line editing, SharePoint allows you to eliminate these hassles.

Edits can be made and updates can be viewed in real-time without being redirected to another page. You can manage the page using the self-explanatory interface of modern SharePoint with less time and effort.
