Even though these Pokemon aren’t Ice types, they are very cool.
The main place to find Ice-type Pokemon in Pokemon games is on routes that are covered in snow. Ice types have been a part of the series since Generation 1. They have a lot of wintery qualities, like white fur and crystals that look like ice. Most ice types have a unique look.
But looks can be deceiving, and there are a few Pokemon that look like they belong in winter but aren’t Ice types. Even though they look like Arctic animals or act cold, these Pokemon aren’t Ice types, which is a bit of a surprise.
Piplup, Prinplup, & Empoleon
Piplup and its two evolutions, Prinplup and Empoleon, are the best Pokemon for a winter theme because they look like penguins, which are the cutest animals that live in Antarctica. The fact that these three Pokemon are not Ice types might be the most surprising thing on this list.
Piplup is the starter Pokemon in Generation 4 that is a Water type. Empoleon, its last form, is a dual type of Water and Steel. Empoleon doesn’t have Ice as its secondary type, which is strange given that it is a penguin that lives in the winter. Even so, all three of these Pokemon that look like penguins can learn moves that have to do with ice.
Stantler & Wyrdeer
As winter starts and people start thinking about Christmas, reindeer become a popular symbol and decoration. Since reindeer live in the cold, northern parts of the world, this makes sense. Stantler and its Hisuian evolution, Wyrdeer, are the Pokemon that look most like reindeer.
Stantler is a Normal-type Pokemon that first appeared in Generation 2, and Wyrdeer is its evolved form. Wyrdeer was first seen in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which came out a long time after Stantler. Wyrdeer has two types, and the Psychic type is the second one. It looks even more like winter than Stantler does because its fur is white and gray.
Winter Form Deerling & Sawsbuck
Deerling and how it has changed Sawsbuck are one of the most interesting Pokemon because their looks change with the seasons. No matter what their seasonal form is, they are both Normal and Grass types. Even though the Grass type seems to go against the wintery theme, Deerling and Sawsbuck’s Winter Forms fit the theme well.
In its Winter Form, Deerling has brown fur, which is less bright than its other seasonal forms and makes it look like a branch without any leaves. Sawsbuck looks even more like fresh snow than its wintery ancestor did because it has fluffy white fur and sharp white antlers.
Xerneas
Since Xerneas looks like a deer, it also fits with the winter theme. Plus, its blue color goes well with the colors of winter. It looks even more like winter in its Shiny form, which has two different shades of blue and cream-colored accents. Its antlers also light up in different colors when it turns on, making them look like Christmas lights.
In Pokemon X, one of the Generation 6 games, Xerneas is the main Legendary Pokemon. It is a Fairy-type Pokémon, but it can also learn some Ice-type moves, like Aurora Beam, which looks like the Northern Lights that light up the sky at night.
Kyogre
Kyogre, a Water-type Pokemon that looks like an orca whale, is another Legendary Pokemon that has something to do with winter. It is the mascot of Pokemon Sapphire and Alpha Sapphire. It is one of the Legendaries from Generation 3.
The orca that inspired Kyogre gives it a cold look, since orcas usually live in the Arctic and Antarctic. It also looks like winter because it is blue. It can also learn moves like Blizzard and Ice Beam that have to do with ice. The most impressive thing about it is that it is the only type that isn’t Ice that can learn the one-hit KO move Sheer Cold.
Jirachi
Jirachi looks like a pale star, which makes me think of the Star of Bethlehem, which is often used to decorate for Christmas in the winter. Its starry shape also makes me think of the longer nights of winter. After all, the Winter Solstice in December is the night with the most hours. It looks like winter because it is white and has light teal stripes.
Jirachi is one of the Generation 3 Mythical Pokemon. Its types are Steel and Psychic, but it can also learn a few Ice-type moves.
Seel
Dewgong is both an Ice and a Water type, but Seel, its previous form, is only a Water type. Seel looks like a seal, which is an animal that lives mostly in cold water, so it fits right in with the winter theme.
Seel also has a few wintery traits that make it look even more like winter. The Pokedex says that it does best in temperatures that are very cold. It can also learn moves that have to do with ice. It may also have the Hidden Ability Ice Body, which is normally only found in Ice types and heals Pokemon when it hails.
Popplio
Popplio is a Pokemon that looks like a sea lion. It looks like Seel. Even though some sea lions live in warmer areas, they are also known to live in the Antarctic, where they eat penguins. Because Popplio gave them the idea, they fit in well with the winter theme.
Popplio is the first Pokemon of Generation 7, and it is a Water type. Popplio comes from Alola, which is a tropical place, but its dark blue and white colors look like they belong in the winter. Popplio can also use TMs to learn a few Ice-type moves.
Litwick
Litwick may not be the first Pokemon that comes to mind when you think of winter. It is both a Ghost and a Fire type. But during the long winter nights, candles are often used to softly light homes and windows. Also, who doesn’t love starting a fire when it’s cold? It’s easy to picture Litwick lighting up the home of its Trainer on a cold winter night. Drift Boss is a one-button endless drifting game where you must avoid falling off a platform with tricky bends and bumps.
Litwick’s colors are also cooler, which fits with the winter theme. Its body, which looks like a candle, is gray-white, and its tiny flame gives off a blue-purple light.
Alcremie
Alcremie is the Fairy-type Cream Pokemon. It was first seen in Generation 8. Alcremie, which is a play on the word “chilled,” reminds me of winter desserts and the whipped cream that goes on top of a hot chocolate or a rich peppermint mocha.
Alcremie even comes in different flavors that change the color of the drink. If you have a Milcery, which is what Alcremie used to look like before it changed, you can choose which flavor it turns into based on how many spins you give it, what time of day it is, and how it is held. Mint is a popular winter flavor, so the Mint Cream Alcremie fits the winter theme even better than the Vanilla Cream Alcremie.
